Discover how a cannabis ERP can automate compliance, simplify audits, and close the books with confidence.

Every December, cannabis operators across the country start the same ritual: late nights with spreadsheets, cursing at QuickBooks, and pulling data from half a dozen systems that refuse to play nice. End of year reporting is supposed to be about wrapping up the books, but for most operators it feels more like wrestling a gorilla made of compliance requirements.

It does not have to be that way. An ERP built for cannabis turns year end reporting from panic mode into a process you can actually trust. The right system will even keep you from burning the midnight oil and crying at your laptop.*

*results may vary

Why Year End Reporting is a Nightmare Without ERP

Look at him. He’s having a terrible time.

Cannabis businesses have a unique kind of reporting pain:

  • Compliance rules that never take a holiday: Regulators expect every gram, dollar, and SKU to tie back to state systems like Metrc or BioTrack. Good luck doing that with scattered spreadsheets and disconnected apps.
  • Inventory math that feels like a trick question: Valuing cannabis inventory is a juggling act. Raw materials, trim, extracts, finished goods, and perishables all have to be counted and costed correctly. One wrong formula and the whole report collapses, and that is before you even try to build out a bill of materials with labor costs included.
  • Revenue streams that do not get along: Cultivation, manufacturing, wholesale, and retail each have their own quirks and payment methods. Reconciling them manually is the definition of busywork.
  • Audits waiting to pounce: Year end is prime time for audits. Manual processes leave you more on edge than cutting edge. As Snoop once said, it is better to stay ready than get ready.

How ERP Turns the Chaos into Clarity

This could be you, but your tech stack is taller than your to do list.

Instead of digging through silos, ERP brings finance, compliance, and operations into one system. The result is year-end reporting that does not require caffeine fueled marathons.

  • Automatic compliance syncs keep numbers aligned with state systems. No surprises, no drama.
  • Real time inventory valuation tracks costs across every stage so you are not rebuilding the math at the last minute.
  • Finance and operations actually talk to each other in ERP. No more chasing down mystery numbers; everything connects by design.
  • Audit ready reports are baked in. What used to take days now takes minutes.
  • Multi location roll ups let operators see the big picture instead of piecing it together like a jigsaw puzzle.

The Part Nobody Talks About

Our industry knows the right tools are non-negotiable

End of year reporting isn’t just about filing taxes or proving compliance. It’s also your team’s chance to learn from the year, and for an accurate analysis you need a single source of truth. ERP gives cannabis operators visibility to spot what worked, what flopped, and where next year’s growth should come from. Without that clarity, you are not planning, you are guessing, and those guesses get expensive and dangerous.

Close the Books Without Losing Your Mind

End of year reporting will never be fun, but it should not feel like punishment. With ERP, cannabis operators step into reporting season with confidence instead of chaos, accuracy instead of anxiety.

Ready to swap late night spreadsheet misery for stress free reporting? Talk to 365 Cannabis and make this year the one you finish strong.

Scaling Cannabis Cultivation Across Multiple Locations https://www.365cannabis.com/scaling-cannabis-cultivation-multiple-locations/ Mon, 29 Sep 2025 17:21:19 +0000 https://www.365cannabis.com/?p=8649 Scaling cannabis cultivation across multiple facilities brings compliance, yield, and financial challenges. Learn how cannabis ERP helps mid-size operators expand with confidence.

The post Scaling Cannabis Cultivation Across Multiple Locations appeared first on 365 Cannabis.

]]>
When a cultivator grows from a single site to multiple facilities, the challenges multiply. Mid-size operators expanding in states like Michigan, Missouri, and Massachusetts often find themselves buried in compliance work, juggling plant tags, and struggling to keep accurate yield forecasts.

Compliance Across Facilities

Every state relies on systems such as Metrc or BioTrack to monitor cannabis production (predominantly Metrc). For multi-location operators, manual data entry across two or more sites increases the risk of compliance errors. A missed plant tag sync or an incorrect harvest weight can result in fines, destroyed product, or even license suspension. Cannabis ERP software eliminates that risk by automating compliance reporting across every site.

Centralized Plant and Inventory Management

Mid-size cultivators scaling to new facilities need consistent tracking for:

  • Propagation and clone movement across facilities
  • Nutrient schedules and environmental controls
  • Batch harvesting, curing, and packaging by location
Without a single system, teams waste time reconciling spreadsheets and siloed software. ERP consolidates plant and inventory data into one view so growers can compare performance across sites.

Yield Forecasting and Demand Planning

Scaling means bigger harvests, but without forecasting, operators can overshoot demand and flood the market. ERP systems provide real-time visibility into expected yields across multiple grows. Leadership can plan packaging, allocate product to wholesale or retail, and forecast revenue with confidence. This prevents waste and protects margins.

Financial Visibility Across States

Expanding facilities comes with higher costs. Multi-state operators especially need consolidated reporting to measure profitability per location. ERP allows CFOs to see:

  • Cost per pound per facility
  • Revenue by channel (wholesale vs retail)
  • Cash flow impact of expansion
This financial visibility is crucial for making the right investments in new facilities.

The Bottom Line

Scaling cultivation is not just about building bigger grows. It is about creating smarter systems that keep compliance, operations, and finance connected. Mid-size operators who adopt ERP tailored for cannabis can scale with confidence, protect margins, and gain the competitive advantage of consolidated data.

Ready to scale smarter? Learn how 365 Cannabis supports cultivators expanding across multiple sites.

From Cannabis to Cucumbers: Why Growers Are Expanding Their Green Thumbs https://www.365cannabis.com/cannabis-cultivation-gateway-gardening/ Wed, 24 Sep 2025 20:11:39 +0000 https://www.365cannabis.com/?p=8640 A new poll suggests cannabis really is a gateway drug — to gardening. From tomatoes to herbs, growers are expanding their green thumbs, and multi-site operators can take notes.

A new poll making the rounds has stoners smiling. Apparently, cannabis really is a “gateway drug” … to gardening. According to Marijuana Moment, people who grow cannabis at home are far more likely to branch out into tomatoes, herbs, and other plants once they’ve mastered their first harvest.

This wholesome data set is a fantastic reminder of how a green thumb can grow. Whether you’re a multi-site operator managing acres of canopy or a hobbyist tending to a balcony grow, cannabis inspires a deeper connection to the land and to the science of cultivation.

Why Cannabis Growers Makes Great Gardeners

Perfect for the munchies
  1. Attention to detail
Cannabis growers learn early: a small mistake in watering, nutrients, humidity, or light can have huge effects. That attention carries over into other botanical endeavors
  1. Love of experimentation
Cultivators constantly tweak grow mediums, lighting schedules, and genetics. Once you’ve dialed in your flower, experimenting with peppers or heirloom tomatoes is the natural next step
  1. Joy of the harvest
There’s nothing quite like pulling down a finished crop. That satisfaction is an addictive rush, and it makes sense growers want to feel it again with other plants they can consume

Multi-Location Cultivators, Take Note

I didn’t know there was this much green in the whole galaxy

This lighthearted poll has a serious takeaway for stakeholders in the industry: cultivation expertise is transferable. The skills your team uses to maximize yields, keep plants healthy, and standardize processes are the same ones that could drive innovation in other crops.

In fact, some large cannabis operators are already diversifying into hemp, hops, and even vertical farming for produce. It is not just a clever byproduct, it’s smart business. Cannabis pushed them to become better farmers, and those skills can expand into new revenue streams.

Cannabis Culture Meets Gardening Culture

Don’t panic, it’s organic

There is also a cultural overlap for customers. Cannabis consumers are increasingly looking for transparency, sustainability, and “farm to table” vibes in their flower. These are the same qualities foodies look for in their produce. For cultivators, this poll is a reminder that your customers are not just buying based on THC percentages. Consumers are buying into a story of cultivation, care, and craftsmanship and that builds loyalty.

Leaning into that connection, whether through brand storytelling, sustainability initiatives, or even cross promoting with local farms, can help cultivators stand out in a crowded market.

Unforeseen Delicious Consequences

Let’s be real: the cannabis industry has plenty of heavy news around taxes, compliance, and consolidation. Sometimes it’s refreshing to step back and remember why we love this plant in the first place. It teaches patience, nurtures curiosity, and, apparently, makes us better gardeners overall.

So, whether you are scaling up across states or just happy your basil plant is still alive, one thing is clear: growing cannabis opens doors. Not just to bigger harvests, but to a greener lifestyle, a deeper appreciation for farming, and maybe even the juiciest tomatoes on the block.

Want to take your cultivation skills beyond the grow room? 365 Cannabis helps multi-site operators master the details, from compliance to costing, so you can focus on growing, whether that is cannabis, cucumbers, or anything in between.

Why Cannabis Cultivators Outgrow QuickBooks https://www.365cannabis.com/metrc-compliance-without-quickbooks/ Wed, 17 Sep 2025 00:18:05 +0000 https://www.365cannabis.com/?p=8628 Learn why cannabis cultivators outgrow QuickBooks. Discover how ERP with direct Metrc integration simplifies compliance, eliminates manual entry, and streamlines finance in one platform.

The post Why Cannabis Cultivators Outgrow QuickBooks appeared first on 365 Cannabis.

]]>
Metrc is the standardized backbone of cannabis compliance. Every plant, transfer, and sale must be recorded, and cultivators know the rules are non-negotiable. For small operations, spreadsheets and QuickBooks can work as a starting point. But for medium and large cultivators, this Frankenstein tech system creates more problems than it solves. Manual entry leads to mistakes, period. QuickBooks doesn’t connect to Metrc, period. Spreadsheets aren’t audit-proof, period. At scale, the compliance burden becomes a business risk.

The good news? You don’t have to juggle three systems to stay compliant. With cannabis-specific ERP software, cultivators can integrate directly with Metrc and remove the need for QuickBooks altogether to save you time, money and sanity.

The Trouble with QuickBooks in Cannabis

QuickBooks is one of the most widely used accounting tools in the world. It’s affordable, accessible, and a majority of bookkeepers are trained on it. For basic journal entries or vendor payments, QuickBooks can get the job done. But for many cannabis operators, it falls short or leaves you hanging.

QuickBooks doesn’t integrate with Metrc. That means cultivators must manually enter data into two separate systems, doubling the workload and the risk of human error. It also doesn’t handle batch management, yield tracking, or compliance tagging. When regulators audit, pulling accurate reports across spreadsheets, QuickBooks, and Metrc becomes a nightmare. On top of all the industry-specific shortcomings, the Intuit terms of service allow QuickBooks to pull the plug on cannabis businesses at any time.

In short, QuickBooks was never designed for cannabis. For growing cultivators, the cracks show fast.

Why ERP is Different

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems built for cannabis combine finance, compliance, and operations in one platform. The right ERP integrates directly with Metrc, so every plant and every gram is tracked automatically. No duplicate entry. No gaps between systems.

As a disclaimer, not EVERY ERP is built for cannabis. 365 Cannabis utilizes Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 Business Central ERP and has custom built it exclusively for cannabis. On a more confusing note, not every ERP in cannabis is actually an ERP- it’s common for some seed-to-sale software to claim they’re an ERP despite not delivering on the ERP promise.

A true ERP streamlines all software for operators and eliminates the need for a mismatched tech stack.

Here’s what cultivators gain with ERP:

  • Direct Metrc integration: Plant tagging, harvest data, and transfers flow automatically
  • Compliance-ready reports: Regulators ask, you pull the data fast
  • Audit trails: Every action is tracked, so you’re always inspection-ready
  • Integrated finance and forecasting: Cost per gram, yield forecasting, and revenue reporting are tied directly to your cultivation data

Instead of bouncing between Metrc, QuickBooks, and spreadsheets, ERP creates one source of truth.

Beyond Compliance: Smarter Operations with ERP

The benefit of ERP goes beyond Metrc capabilities and what any seed-to-sale can offer. By uniting compliance and finance, cultivators finally see the true cost of production. Batch data connects directly to financial reports. Yield forecasts are grounded in real numbers, not guesses. Investors and stakeholders get clear, accurate reports.

And without QuickBooks in the middle, finance teams don’t fight against a system that was never meant for cannabis. Everything lives in one platform designed for the industry. Your finance team will thank you, and they’re the team you really want to win over (trust us).

Next Steps

Metrc is mandatory. QuickBooks is optional. For cultivators who want to scale without compliance risk, ERP is the clear path forward. By integrating directly with Metrc and eliminating the need for QuickBooks, cannabis operators save time, reduce risk, and create a stronger foundation for growth.

Your compliance system should not hold you back. Schedule a demo with 365 Cannabis today and see how ERP makes compliance simple, accurate, and scalable.

We just returned from MJ Unpacked in St. Louis, Missouri, held September 3 – 5 at the historic Union Station Hotel. MJ Unpacked bills itself as a platform “curated for licensed operators, researchers, and investors to elevate their businesses and ignite new opportunities.” If you’ve attended before, you know that promise is delivered, and this show doesn’t miss. Here are a few highlights from our time at MJ Unpacked St. Louis.

The Gong

The best celebrations are not quiet. MJ Unpacked has a gong that is accessible during show hours. Close a deal? Bang the gong. It tells everyone in the event space that one, you just closed a deal (congrats!) and two, this event works. The echoing sound of success rings throughout the day, reaffirming attendees that attending this show delivers results. Yes, you can bang the gong just for fun, but frankly it feels better to earn it.

Midwestern Microbusinesses

There was clear thoughtfulness about who was encouraged to attend MJ Unpacked in St. Louis, and Missouri’s microbusinesses showed up in force. We met with so many operators eager to ensure their craft cannabis found an audience. MoCannTrade also hosted meetups and had a booth on the expo floor, adding even more resources and visibility for Missouri’s growing cannabis market.

The Voices at The Slams

MJ Unpacked has a way of platforming its people in accessible ways, and one of my favorites was the slam series. Throughout the expo hours, there were opportunities where thought leaders would get three minutes on the slam stage to speak to attendees. These slams ranged from focusing on brands to tech to budtender voices. We may be biased as 365 Cannabis got time during the tech slam to talk all things ERP, but we also loved the budtender slam. Seeing budtenders talk earnestly about what products speak to them was an energizing reminder of the front-line customer experience.

The Puppies and Kittens

MJ Unpacked did one of the best attendee-facing experiences ever committed to a convention floor, and that’s the puppy zone. St. Louis’s own APA adoption center set up two pens with adoptable puppies and kittens; the perfect de-stress destination. The staff were all kind and gentle with animals and attendees alike. Occasionally staff would take the dogs through the aisles so they could get a short walk in and meet the expo attendees. And while the puppies didn’t ask us about ERP software, we’re pretty sure they’d approve of streamlined operations.

MJ Unpacked St. Louis once again proved why it’s one of the most valuable events in the cannabis industry. From celebrating wins at the gong to connecting with Missouri microbusinesses, learning from budtenders, and even pausing to pet puppies, the show delivered on every front. For us at 365 Cannabis, it was also an opportunity to show how a purpose-built ERP can support operators of all sizes. Whether you’re a startup microbusiness or a multi-state operator, our platform is designed to simplify compliance, strengthen operations, and help you scale with confidence.

See how ERP with Metrc integration, inventory, finance, and analytics helps operators scale.

]]>
Missouri is one of the fastest growing cannabis markets in the United States. As of 2025, Missouri is sitting at 4.6% growth year over year (per Headset). The adult-use market is relatively newer; their recreational market opened in February 2023 but sales have been steady since launch. There are 67 active cultivation licenses in Missouri currently that are all fighting for shelf space and market share, and that’s not including the microbusinesses or the licenses yet to be issued. Missouri operators need the right tools to secure a top spot in this fast-moving industry.

Here’s Everything You Need to Scale Your Missouri Cannabis Business in 2025

Automated Metrc Integration

Missouri’s state compliance system is Metrc, the leading state cannabis compliance system in the United States. There are many operators who rely on manual entry for tracking plants and products, however manual entry leaves a lot of room for risk. The compliance fees and fines significantly outweigh the cost of trustworthy compliance software. Competitive operators in Missouri are actively looking for cannabis software with an automated metrc integration to avoid manual entry errors. The leading cannabis ERP systems, like 365 Cannabis, are designed with compliance guardrails to ensure users stay within regulations at every step, something we pride ourselves on.

Real-Time Inventory Control

As a company grows, so do their assets and that includes every seed, every gram, every gummy. Having instant access to all products across cultivation, manufacturing, and retail is a non-negotiable for the leading Missouri cannabis operators. Real-time inventory control gives operators instant visibility into every SKU, eliminating blind spots and costly write-offs. The right cannabis software will track take account of everything within the supply chain and production schedule and be able to deliver Available-to-Purchase (ATP) data for sales (and here’s why that’s important).

Integrated Cannabis-Focused Financial Tools

Missouri’s cannabis community is booming and that means more money to manage for operators. Many businesses, cannabis or not, use QuickBooks. That’s a fair tool for some businesses, but it’s not designed or optimized at all for cannabis operators. Cannabis has unique challenges as a federally illegal, state legal, Schedule I substance subject to 280E. Outside of the QuickBooks limitations, due to cannabis being federally illegal, they do reserve the right to not support any cannabis enterprises, even fully legal and licensed ones. We’ve seen reported issues with QuickBooks as early as 2015 of entire financial recording software locked overnight. While QuickBooks does often turn a blind eye, they overall do not serve the needs of the cannabis community. ERP platforms have financial systems built into place that serve two functions- eliminating the need for third party financials like QuickBooks and integrating all efforts to ensure financial data is accurate. The 365 Cannabis financial module for example pulls financial data in from all sales, all purchases, all invoices, everywhere that touches the business to ensure every penny is accounted for. Native financial functions reduce the opportunity for human error and ensure every spend and every sale is accounted for.

Data and Analytics for Decision Making

Missouri’s cannabis market is still relatively young, which means consumer behavior is evolving quickly. Operators who rely only on historic sales data risk missing major shifts in category demand. Advanced analytics provide real-time visibility into product performance, costs, and margins, helping operators pivot quickly and stay ahead of competitors. Dashboards powered by tools like Microsoft’s Power BI allow businesses to identify growth categories, spot inefficiencies, and make data-driven decisions with confidence. In a fast-moving market, analytics are the difference between reacting to trends and leading them.

Missouri cannabis operators are competing in one of the most dynamic markets in the country. Success in Missouri’s cannabis market demands excellence in compliance, product visibility, accuracy, finance, and control across the entire business. ERP built for cannabis, like 365 Cannabis, combines compliance, inventory, financials, and analytics into one platform designed for growth.

If you’re ready to scale your Missouri cannabis operation, schedule a demo with 365 Cannabis and see how ERP can help you lead the market.

Metrc California Recall Explained and What It Means for Cannabis Operators

California cannabis operators are facing a major compliance update with the launch of Metrc’s direct to consumer recall tool. This new feature was announced on Wednesday, August 20th and changes how cannabis product recalls are managed in California. The tool shifts responsibility from dispensaries to a system driven notification that alerts consumers directly. For operators, the Metrc California recall system represents both an opportunity to build trust and a challenge to manage increased compliance pressure.

What is the Metrc California Recall Tool?

Metrc is the state system for California’s cannabis industry. In California, Metrc is used to monitor cannabis from cultivation through retail sale. Historically, product recalls were communicated through dispensaries and regulators, with operators relying on store staff or email chains to notify customers. Metrc is utilizing their partnership with Retail ID to communicate product information. This creates a direct channel straight to consumers from Metrc themselves. By streamlining middle steps, California regulators can deliver faster and more reliable alerts when a product is identified as unsafe or mislabeled.

Why the Recall Update Matters for Cannabis Businesses

An interesting side effect of this movement will be the direct visibility users have when interacting with brands and products. Dispensaries have reached varying levels of effectiveness when relaying product updates to customers. Some can be very effective or proactive with recalls while others may slap a sign up on the show floor and call it a day. This initiative thankfully reduces the workload from dispensaries and refocuses the recall discussion to the products and brands. Here are some high-level benefits we anticipate from this pivot:

  • Faster notifications ensure that unsafe products are identified and removed quickly
  • More visibility for regulators strengthens consumer protection and industry transparency
  • Higher compliance standards place more pressure on businesses to maintain clean and accurate product records
  • Reduced labor for retailers as they can advise guests to scan product for recall information, rather than actively communicating to customers

The Risks Operators Should Consider

On the flip side of this initiative, brands can anticipate an increased level of visibility with any potential recalls. Brands that have recurring recalls will be repeatedly brought to the forefront of the conversation which may (and should) impact their brand affinity and even market share. The Metrc California recall tool makes transparency unavoidable, meaning operators must be prepared to respond quickly and clearly to prevent brand damage.

How California Cannabis Operators Can Prepare

Operators with increased concerns about Metrc California’s recall tool need to zoom out and bring compliance to the forefront. There are a few options but optimizing compliance tools is essential. Many Seed-to-Sale software options focus on solely connecting to Metrc as a safeguard. A full suite ERP, however, goes past the Seed-to-Sale compliance and delivers compliance safeguard across every element of the business. A software tracker that brings in all departments into one source of truth can be leveraged for accurate inventory, batch tracking, and stopping issues before they arise.

Being proactive is the best defense against the potential disruption of a recall.

How 365 Cannabis Supports Recall Management

365 Cannabis helps operators manage recalls seamlessly by combining compliance, finance, and operations in one ERP system. With centralized inventory and batch tracking, compliance integrated reporting, and financial impact visibility, 365 Cannabis equips operators to handle recalls quickly and effectively. Instead of scrambling during a recall event, operators using 365 Cannabis can act with confidence, minimize losses, and protect their brand.

Where Do We Go From Here?

The new Metrc California recall system raises the stakes for cannabis operators across the state. Businesses that rely on spreadsheets or disconnected software will struggle to keep up with the speed and transparency regulators now demand. With 365 Cannabis, operators gain a trusted ERP partner that ensures recalls are managed with accuracy, efficiency, and accountability.

Missouri’s cannabis industry is growing fast. Since adult-use launched in February 2023, operators have seen record sales. Missouri quickly became the fifth largest recreational market in the country. Along with those stellar sales came tighter margins, complex compliance rules, and new financial challenges. Many Missouri cannabis businesses are searching for cannabis software that goes beyond a Metrc integrated seed-to-sale and supports their growth.

We’re proud to say that 365 Cannabis is heading to MJ Unpacked St. Louis this September to help Missouri operators find the right solution to manage compliance, finance, and operations in one seamless system.

Why Missouri Cannabis Operators Outgrow Seed-to-Sale

Basic tools handle compliance, but Missouri operators need more to stay competitive:

  • Compliance and Reporting: Keep up with Missouri’s state system, Metrc, and reduce manual errors
  • Financial Management: Handle cannabis-specific accounting, inclusive of 280E, and real-time reporting
  • Inventory Control: Track plants, batches, and packaged goods across facilities
  • Profitability: Protect margins as wholesale pricing shifts with supply and demand

Competitive cannabis operators are looking for ERP solutions that streamline efforts across facilities. ERP eliminates the need for third party finance solutions, like QuickBooks, and aligns efforts with more detailed data reporting.

365 Cannabis ERP for Missouri Cannabis Businesses

With 365 Cannabis ERP, Missouri operators get:

  • Finance & Accounting – General ledger, AP/AR, budgeting, and integrated reporting.
  • Cultivation & Production – Harvest tracking, yield forecasting, recipe management.
  • Inventory Visibility – Real-time plant-to-package tracking.
  • Built-in Compliance – Direct integration for tagging and reporting.

This all-in-one approach saves time, reduces compliance risks, and prepares Missouri operators to scale.

The post Why Available to Promise (ATP) Matters to Cannabis Operators appeared first on 365 Cannabis.

]]>
Oversupply in the cannabis industry has fueled the infamous “race to the bottom,” pushing prices lower and squeezing margins for operators nationwide. Too many cannabis businesses focus on sheer output and overlook a key business practice: selling through inventory at a healthy margin.

Because cannabis is a regulated product with strict expiration dates, operators must not only produce efficiently but also turn product quickly. The reality is that many overproduce which forces them to slash prices just to get product onto shelves. This cycle of oversupply and discounting has accelerated falling wholesale prices across the U.S. According to Cannabis Benchmarks, the weighted average price for a pound of cannabis dropped from $1,328 in August 2019 to just $1,093 in August 2025—a 17.7% decrease—while inflation rose by 26.36% in the same period.

Data based on the United States

With rising costs of living and operating facing off with a race to the bottom, cannabis operators need smarter strategies to protect margins and stay competitive.

Spoilers: we got your back on this but keep reading.

How Can Cannabis Operators Control Their Sales Inventory?

A major factor in the race to the bottom is discounting product pricing. Common reasons for discounting products are upcoming expiration dates and having too much product on hand and needing to make space. A solution that we have seen success with is Available to Purchase (ATP) in cannabis software.

What is ATP in Cannabis?

ATP is a live tool in cannabis inventory management software that delivers data to operators on how much cannabis can be legally and operationally committed to a sale. Basic inventory counts will only show how much finished product is ready to sell at that moment- just what’s on hand. An APT program is a comprehensive look at what you have on hand, what you have allocated to customer orders, what’s quarantined, what’s in the production cycle, and what’s pending testing. Where basic inventory reports give a surface-level snapshot, ATP provides a comprehensive, real-time picture of what’s actually sellable.

How does ATP Help Cannabis Operators?

ATP capabilities for cannabis management extend past sales availability; it can also be a compliance safeguard. The accurate numbers inclusive of products in testing or to be finished soon deliver accurate inventory across the board. This ensures alignment with the state compliance system and avoids unnecessary compliance penalties. Many ATP solutions also offer FIFO capabilities to ensure, true to form, product is sold on a first in, first out basis.

ATP also prevents accidental oversell situations that may be costly and labor inducive to fix. Aside from oversells, there may be fees or penalties within state compliance systems for inaccurate product numbers. The ATP tool becomes a single source of truth for cannabis sales commitments and streamlines operations for your sales team.

Cannabis operators are familiar with the need for seed-to-sale software- it’s an essential platform for compliance with METRC or BioTrack. Many plug and play their software and call it a day, however its only use in many cases is compliance when it could be doing more. Cannabis businesses looking to scale, boost profitability, and streamline operations across cultivation, manufacturing, finance, and distribution, simply need more support. That’s where the key difference between a seed-to-sale software and an ERP for cannabis operators comes in. A cannabis ERP becomes a nucleus for the operation, bringing in compliance, finance, and operations together to deliver business-critical data for immediate decision making at every turn. There is some miscommunication and confusion around what an ERP is in cannabis, and this guide delivers the key differences between cannabis ERP and seed-to-sale software.

What is an ERP?

ERP stands for Enterprise Resource Planning, and is a platform that streamlines a company’s operations, efficiency, data, and finance. The ERP becomes the internal hub for all moves made within the buisness. Major companies utilize ERP to ensure that every aspect of their organization across all locations are connected, tracked, and accounted for. Massive corporations like Ford, Under Armour and Coca-Cola all utilize ERP systems, and specifically use Microsoft-based ERP systems. The biggest draw for companies to implement an ERP is scalability- ERP systems are built for long term growth.

What is a Cannabis ERP?

A cannabis ERP has all the same functionionality that large scale organizations utlize, but also includes features for compliance. The ERP connects cultivation, production, manufacturing, distribution, and retail along with the most important aspect of cannabis- compliance. Any self-respecting cannabis ERP removes the need for QuickBooks or other standalone finance platforms because ERP inherently includes financal support. Metrc and BioTrack intergrations are also embedded within cannabis ERPs to ensure compliance at every step of the plant life’s process from planting the seed to hitting the customer’s exit bag.

What is Seed-to-Sale?

Seed-to-Sale is a term that gets used a lot in the cannabis space and may appear interchangable with POS, or even ERP, at times. Seed-to-Sale is typically used as a compliance system and POS to organize and hold all the operator’s information. This is helpful however, Seed-to-Sale does not integrate finance platforms forcing users to utilize QuickBooks or other finance platforms. While some Seed-to-Sale software programs may be more robust than others, overall they are limited by:

  • No finance management
  • No or extremely limited support for manufacturing or processsing
  • No cross-departmental integration
  • Reporting that only pertains to specific transactions or tasks, not representative of the entire buisness suite of functionality

A Seed-to-Sale software focuses on regulatory compliance, but doesn’t offer the resources for scalability.

What are the Major Differences Between ERP and Seed-to-Sale?

Seed-to-Sale is a regulatory platform for compliance and limited reporting. It works for dispensaries as far as inventory and retail sales tying into state regulatory platforms. ERP is a data powerhouse that connects every aspect of an operation, vertically integrated or not, across all locations and becomes the central source of truth for business decisions. A Seed-to-Sale delivers a summary of what happened, while an ERP delivers context of why things happen and what to plan for in the future.

Who Should Use a Seed-to-Sale vs. an ERP?

Seed-to-Sale is a great option for single location retailers. A standalone dispensary needs a compliance tool to ensure they’re in line with Metrc, BioTrack, or whatever regulations in their area are needed.

ERP is a great option for vertically integrated companies, multi-location and multi-state groups, and companies primed to scale their operation. Cultivators, manufacturors, producers, and retailers are able to make use of an ERP to align their entire organization, including financials.

ERP users are able to replace multiple disconnected business tools like separate Seed-to-Sale, inventory platforms, manufacturing softrware, accounting software, and loose spreadsheets and pulls all data into one unified platform. ERP reduces human error by eliminating double entry across serveral touchpoints.

Not every operator needs an ERP to survive; many are viable candidates for a simple Seed-to-Sale software. The operators looking for growth, streamlined operations, and a single software partner to track every COG, every BOM, every invoice, every penny moved through the organization need to be looking at an ERP.
